Quick answer: If a kiosk can't reach the POS, first check your router and switch lights are green, and that the Master POS is on and signed in to Nomni POS. Then check the kiosk is pointed at the Master's address: on the Windows kiosk, use Settings > Connection and Test POS Connection; on the Android kiosk (Nomni Kiosk), use Settings > Device Mode. If kiosks keep dropping off and coming back, reserve fixed IP addresses on your router.
This article is for venues using a Self-Ordering Kiosk (Windows) or Nomni Kiosk (Android).
Before you start
Find out which kiosk app you have:
Windows (Self-Ordering Kiosk): settings open from a cogwheel icon.
Android (Nomni Kiosk, Kiosk T-Series or N-Series): settings open by tapping the top-left corner of the Tap to Start screen. There's no visible button there.
Have your kiosk password ready. On the Android kiosk, it's your Nomni Console sign-in password. Your manager has it; we can't share passwords in chat.
Note the Device Address of your Master POS (on iPad: Settings > Connection).
Kiosk can't connect to the POS
You may see one of these:
Couldn't Connect to POS! (Windows kiosk)
Unable to connect to the POS, please try again. (Windows kiosk, on the settings test)
Customers see We are currently unable to connect to the POS system. Please ask the staff to check the POS status.
1. Check the basics (all kiosks)
Check your router and switch. All their lights should be green. If they aren't, contact us.
Check the Master POS is switched on, Nomni POS is open, and it's signed in.
If you have more than one kiosk and they all dropped at the same time, the problem is most likely the network or the Master POS, not the kiosks. Fix that first, then check each kiosk reconnects.
2a. Windows kiosk
Connect a keyboard and mouse to the kiosk, or turn on the Windows on-screen keyboard (Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard, then turn on Use the On-Screen Keyboard).
Tap the cogwheel icon on the kiosk.
Enter your password. If you can't remember it, contact us.
In Settings > Connection, check the Master POS IP Address matches the Master's Device Address.
Click Test POS Connection.
What you should see: Connected to POS successfully. The kiosk also shows on the Master POS under Client List, listed as a Table Ordering device.
2b. Android kiosk (Nomni Kiosk)
On the Tap to Start screen, tap the top-left corner.
Enter your password, then tap Settings.
Open Device Mode.
Check the Master POS type matches your POS: Android POS or iOS POS.
Pick your Master under Available Masters, or enter the Master's IP address in Master server IP. Then tap Connect.
If you see Auto connect, leave it on so the kiosk reconnects by itself.
What you should see: Connected to Master: followed by the Master's name.
If you see:
Master is not connected: go back to step 1. Check the Master is on and signed in, and its IP address hasn't changed.
Not connected to a network: reconnect the kiosk to your Wi-Fi or network cable.
Wrong company for iOS Master POS…: the kiosk is signed in to a different company from the POS. Sign it in with your own company login.
A message that it will retry in 10 seconds: wait for the kiosk to retry.
If your kiosk is paired with an iOS POS and opens in Table Ordering, see the Related articles (fixed in Nomni Kiosk 1.0.82).
3. If kiosks keep dropping off and coming back
This usually means device addresses change after a router or power restart, or Android devices change their Wi-Fi identity.
Ask your IT provider to set a DHCP reservation (fixed IP) on the router for the Master POS and each kiosk.
On Android kiosks, turn off random MAC addresses (choose Use device MAC).
In busy venues, put POS devices on 5 GHz only.
Printing problems
Kitchen printer not printing: if receipts print at the kiosk but production dockets don't print in the kitchen, the kiosk may not be reaching the kitchen printer. Follow our printer troubleshooting guide, or contact us.
Kiosk printer not printing: the kiosk asks customers for their name instead of printing a receipt with an order number. Customers type their name and tap Confirm Name, and staff call the name when the order is ready.
To test the kiosk printer:
Windows: go to Settings > Connection, then click Test Printer. Note any error and contact us.
Android: go to Settings > Printer Settings and check the printer is listed.
Menu not updating
In Nomni Console, open the kiosk menu (Menus > Kiosk Menu), make your changes, and publish.
On the kiosk, go to Settings > Connection > Sync Now (Windows), or run a full sync (Android).
Close and reopen the kiosk app.
What you should see: the kiosk menu matches Nomni Console.
If you use head-office (HQ) menus, publish from the HQ account first, then sync each store.
Kiosk orders rejected by the POS
The Master POS checks every kiosk order before accepting it. On Nomni POS for Android, an order is rejected when:
The register is closed. The kiosk shows Cash register is closed, please call staff. Open the register on the Master POS.
An item is sold out or has no portions left. Update stock on the POS, or remove the item from the kiosk menu.
The kiosk is signed in to a different company, or there's no Master POS. Check the kiosk uses your company login and one POS is set to Master.
When it's working: The kiosk shows it's connected (Connected to POS successfully or Connected to Master:), test orders arrive on the POS, dockets print, and the menu matches Nomni Console.
If something goes wrong
Contact us with your venue name, the kiosk type (Windows or Android), its Device Name and app version, the exact message on screen, whether other kiosks dropped at the same time, and what you've tried.
